What is Healthcare Day?
Imagine a world without doctors, nurses, home care workers or other healthcare providers. In that world, every ailment could turn into a major disaster, where a simple fall could become a tragedy. Fortunately, we don't live in that world, and that's thanks to the heroes who keep our healthcare system afloat! They are there for us day and night. Healthcare Day is a day when we put these champions extra in the spotlight, and thank them for their care and dedication to the well-being of others.
Thanks to Florence Nightingale
The origin of Healthcare Day goes back to Florence Nightingale. She is considered the founder of modern nursing. Her story is therefore very special. In 1853, the English government asked Florence to help with the Crimean War. English soldiers were dying in droves at that time due to poor organization and a lack of hygiene, doctors, and resources. Florence went and took 38 nurses with her. In the chaos, she managed to set up a well-functioning hospital. And with great success, because the death rate under her leadership dropped from 40% to 2%! Florence Nightingale was not just a nurse: she was a visionary who changed the healthcare sector forever by emphasizing hygiene and professional development. Thanks to Florence, the nursing profession has taken its contemporary form. We celebrate Healthcare Day on her birthday.
When is Healthcare Day?
The answer to that question is simple, and also the same every year: Healthcare Day always falls on May 12th. That is Florence Nightingale's birthday.
What is Nurses' Day?
Actually, Healthcare Day is Nurses' Day. Internationally, it has been agreed that May 12th is Nurses' Day: the day when the good work of nurses is recognized. In the Netherlands, however, we have broadened this. On Healthcare Day, we celebrate broader healthcare, including doctors, therapists, and other healthcare providers. The purpose of both terms, or Days, is the same: to show appreciation for the important role healthcare professionals play in society!
What happens on Healthcare Day?
Various events take place on Healthcare Day. Hospitals and institutions often organize open days. In addition, healthcare workers are put in the spotlight with festive activities, such as drinks and team outings. And often a small gift for healthcare staff is arranged.
