De BloomsBox: Een duurzaam alternatief voor bloemen - Blooms out of the Box

The BloomsBox: A sustainable alternative to flowers

Flowers are a symbol of beauty, love, and joy. They are therefore used for all sorts of occasions, such as weddings, birthdays, or to thank someone. Flowers are beautiful and bring cheer to many places. However, in recent years, the negative impact of the flower industry on the environment and society has received more attention.

Sustainable and organic flowers are gaining popularity, and we also see that sustainable alternatives to flowers are being developed. In this blog, we delve deeper into the challenges of the flower industry, what a more sustainable alternative to flowers can be, and what benefits this alternative offers.

A flower for every occasion

In Dutch culture, there are many occasions where we give or use flowers. You give flowers when someone has a birthday or when someone gets a promotion, but you also see flowers at events. We Dutch people are big fans of flowers, which is why you can buy them everywhere. You can buy flowers at the florist, in the supermarket, and even at the gas station.

The world's largest flower auction is also located in the Netherlands. In 2021, approximately 12.1 billion flowers were sold there (Source: Omroep West), the vast majority of which are exported to countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom. So we are a major flower country!

The challenges of the flower industry

Despite our love for flowers, they are now getting a somewhat less favorable image. More and more is becoming known about the negative environmental impact of the traditional flower industry. Both the cultivation process and the transport of flowers pose a challenge in this regard. For example, growing flowers on a large scale requires intensive water use and often high gas consumption, necessary for heating the greenhouses where the flowers are grown. In addition, pesticides and artificial fertilizers are used. This not only demands a lot from the earth's resources but also pollutes the environment. Fortunately, more and more initiatives for organic and sustainable flowers are emerging, which require less from the environment in their cultivation process.

Another challenge of the flower industry is transportation. Often, the flowers sold in the Netherlands come from distant countries, which means they have been transported over long distances. This results in high CO2 emissions.

Sending flowers without packaging waste?

Besides the cultivation process and transportation, the use of packaging also poses a challenge in making the flower trade more sustainable. Disposable plastic packaging is often used to transport flowers safely without them being damaged by transport movements. Moreover, individual bouquets are often wrapped in a sleeve or wrapper that is part of the bouquet and not only protects the flowers but also contributes to the overall appearance of the gift. Unfortunately, this is always packaging that the recipient immediately discards after unpacking.

Seven-day vase guarantee, and then what?

But one of the biggest challenges of the flower industry lies in the product itself. Flowers are a disposable product. They remain beautiful for a maximum of 7 to 9 days and then you throw them away. This makes flowers, however beautiful and organic they may be, by definition a non-sustainable choice...

A sustainable and innovative alternative to flowers

Now that we know more about the impact of the flower industry, we can look for a sustainable alternative to flowers. But what is an alternative that gives the same look & feel as flowers? At Blooms out of the Box, we have developed the BloomsBox: a concept that can replace the bouquet of flowers thanks to its innovative and sustainable approach.

The BloomsBox contains (air-purifying) plants and has its own watering system, allowing even recipients without green fingers to enjoy this green gift for months. What makes the BloomsBox more sustainable than, for example, organic flowers?

Sustainable materials

Instead of using plastic packaging, we at Blooms Out of the Box use environmentally friendly materials such as FSC wood, Paperwise paper, and bamboo paper plant pots. These materials are recyclable or biodegradable, reducing our contribution to waste problems.

No packaging waste

Thanks to the innovative 3-in-1 design of the BloomsBox, the shipping packaging is also immediately the pot and the water reservoir for the plants. This allows us to send this gift without packaging materials that you would otherwise throw away immediately after receipt!

Local production

Instead of transporting flowers over long distances, we opt for local. We collaborate with local businesses for our products and assemble everything in cooperation with social workshops in Utrecht. This reduces CO2 emissions and supports local economies.

Long-lasting nature indoors

With the BloomsBox, just like with sustainable flowers, you bring nature into your home. Although you replace flowers with plants, this comes with one very big advantage: they last longer. The plants in the BloomsBox remain beautiful for months, while flowers unfortunately can be thrown away after just a week.

Even more benefits of a BloomsBox

In addition to sustainability, the BloomsBox offers even more benefits for both the giver and the recipient:

Low maintenance

While you occasionally need to change the water for flowers, this is not necessary with the BloomsBox! You fill the container with water once a month, and the watering system does the rest. This brings convenience and makes the BloomsBox very low-maintenance!

Creative freedom

The BloomsBox is available in multiple versions, something for everyone. You get creative freedom because you can personalize the engraving on the BloomsBox. And you can always add a card with your message for the recipient!

Cost-saving

Because the Bloomsbox lasts a long time, it is not only a sustainable alternative, but it is also a cost-effective choice in the long term: the cost per day of enjoying your gift is up to 10 times lower than with a bouquet of flowers!

Are you opting for a smaller footprint?

The traditional flower industry faces major challenges in terms of sustainability. At Blooms Out of the Box, we offer a sustainable alternative to flowers, emphasizing environmental friendliness and long-term enjoyment of nature indoors. By using environmentally friendly materials, local production, and personalization, we set the tone for a more sustainable and responsible approach to flowers. We also enjoy all the beauty that nature has to offer, but let's do that without harming the planet!
